Evidence trail
An evidence trail is the traceable chain of sources behind an AI-generated insight — the specific tickets, code changes, documents, and conversations from which a claim was derived, exposed so a human can audit the reasoning rather than trust the conclusion.
Evidence trails matter because AI insights without provenance are unverifiable: useful when right, dangerous when wrong, indistinguishable in the moment. In execution contexts — where an insight might trigger a re-plan or an escalation — the trail turns AI from an oracle into a colleague whose work can be checked. A practical standard: every claim should be expandable to its sources, and a system unable to ground a claim should say so rather than fabricate.
