What it is
A task spills over when its sprint ends before the task is done — whether it's then moved to a later sprint or simply left sitting past the end date. Everview tracks this at two levels: per task, and as a per-sprint rate.
On a task, the purple status circle reads "Carried ×N" (how many sprints the task has been moved out of), "Nd past sprint" (how many days it has sat past its sprint's end while open), or both. A carried task also leaves faded copies of itself in the sprints it came from, joined by a wide translucent connector, so the path it traveled stays visible on the canvas.
Per sprint, the spillover rate is the share of planned points that did not finish in place: spillover points ÷ planned points. It appears in the breakdown dashboard — drag across the calendar timeline to open it — as the Spillover trend line, and as a "· N% spillover" figure on the donut's summary for the selected period.

How to read it
Spillover is a retrospective measure: a sprint gets its rate only once it closes. Open work mid-sprint is not spillover yet, so the Spillover line plots closed sprints and the trend badge compares them — shown green when the rate is falling, since less spillover is the good direction.
The planned baseline includes work that was later moved out of the sprint. That's deliberate, and it's the same baseline the Say-Do Ratio divides by — moving unfinished work elsewhere lowers Say-Do and raises spillover instead of quietly vanishing from both.
What to do about it
Read the trend, not one sprint: a single spike after a deliberate scope change is noise, while a persistently high rate means sprints are absorbing more than they can close. A task wearing "Carried ×2" or more is the per-task version of the same signal — usually too big, repeatedly deprioritized, or stuck behind a blocker, and worth splitting or re-planning explicitly. Compare against Say-Do Ratio and Velocity: high spillover with low Say-Do points at over-commitment at planning time; high spillover with normal Say-Do points at work entering sprints mid-flight.
